The HUNTS (Hunter National Training Scheme) course, run by the Hutt Valley branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (HVNZDA), is a structured hunter training program designed for beginner and intermediate hunters. First launched in 1987, the NZDA Hunter National Training Scheme (HUNTS) has helped thousands of hunters gain the skills needed to hunt big game safely and responsibly in New Zealand. For over 35 years, it has provided essential training in firearm safety, ethical hunting, and bushcraft, equipping participants with the knowledge and experience necessary for success in New Zealand’s backcountry.

Course Objectives

• Promote safe and responsible firearm handling
• Teach ethical hunting practices and wildlife conservation principles
• Develop practical bushcraft and navigation skills
• Provide hands-on training in butchering, animal identification, and shooting techniques
• Encourage respect for New Zealand’s unique environment and game animals

Key Components of the Course

• Firearms Safety & Marksmanship – Safe handling, maintenance, and accuracy training at the Kaitoke Range
• Game Animal Identification & Ecology – Learning about deer, goats, pigs, and other game species, including their habits and habitats
• Bushcraft & Navigation – Map reading, compass use, GPS skills, and survival techniques for backcountry hunting
• Hunting Ethics & Legislation – Understanding NZ hunting laws, regulations, and best practices
• Field Skills & Butchering – Hands-on experience in tracking, stalking, shot placement, and processing game meat
• Guided Hunts – Supervised trips with experienced mentors to put theory into practice
• River Crossing & Water Safety – Training in safe techniques for crossing rivers, recognizing hazards, and understanding river dynamics
